SIGIRIYA ROCK

Sigiriya is a very famous ancient fortress in the central part of Sri Lanka. It is built on a massive rock known as the “Lion Rock.” In the 5th century, King Kashyapa created this fortress along with gardens, ponds, and palaces on and around the rock.

One of Sigiriya’s most remarkable features is its frescoes. These wall paintings are a masterpiece of Sri Lankan art. The images are simple but very beautiful, showing women with delicate features, soft colors, and graceful lines. They reflect the artistic and religious values of that era.

The site also includes the fortress ruins, terraced gardens, and water gardens, which make it highly attractive to visitors. From the top of the rock, the views of the surrounding forests, ponds, and gardens are breathtaking and peaceful.

In summary, Sigiriya is an important cultural, historical, and artistic landmark of Sri Lanka. It is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site* for its outstanding universal value.
